Why is liberty reserved for the most powerful? the most vocal? the most wealthy?
I recently traveled to Omaha, Nebraska for a week of Intaglio Printmaking. Normally I paint from life, but I decided to push myself and try creating from my heart and soul. This is what came out of me in July of 2022. I found myself processing both the Uvalde school shooting and the overturning of Roe Versus Wade.
Body autonomy is a basic human right. Women in America are being subjected to a human rights violation. The female body is now regulated by our elected officials and the voting electorate of our state. We allow men to manage mass killing machines, but women aren’t allowed to manage our own bodies. We allow men to manage mass killing machines, yet children in America aren’t granted a safe education.
I am a teacher. Each year I am expected to pretend with my students that someone is trying to kill us. My students are expected to hide silently in a corner of the classroom while an administrator rattles the door and tries to get in. I am expected to field the questions, the fear. All of this so that men can freely own mass killing machines. Why are their liberties more important than the liberties of the rest of us?

Liberty is not a state right. Liberty is not an issue to be voted. Liberty for ALL is what unites us. Liberty for ALL is the foundation of our United States.
